Men Overspend to Attract Mates

I just finished reading Geoffery Miller’s latest book, Spent, and recommend it. This new book has led me to a new discipline, consumer behavior.  Below is an article detailing how men overspend to attract mates. Miller mentions many examples such as the ones included in this article and  unearths a dirty marketing fact- most unnecessary gadgets/products are marketed to males beween the ages of 18-32. Coincidence? I think not. Here’s the kicker, could this “spending” behavior partly explain for our tendency to take on debt?

Introduction (Via LiveScience)

Men are hardwired after eons of evolution to overspend, a new study suggests. Their maxed-out credit cards and mega-purchases have been tied to their desire to attract mates. The biggest male spenders in the survey were found to have the highest number of reported past partners and desired the most future partners. The finding, detailed in the current issue of the journal Evolutionary Psychology, did not hold with women. Vying for women is simply what men do and have done for hundreds of thousands of years, said study leader Daniel Kruger, a social and evolutionary psychologist at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. But how they entice mates has evolved.

When I owned a compounded 1,000HP (power boat, convertible) carried the latest cellphone in my designer jeans I got laid all the time by women of all shades and grades. Now I only hide a vintage Mercedes in the garage of my bungalow and I have a steady girlfriend. There is something appealing to this theory but I think it also has to do with a diminishing sex drive once one is past the big 4. I am happy if she does not show up every day ;-)
